Goku
The protagonist of the series, Goku is eight years old when Dragonball begins and eight when it ends. This might seem odd, seeing as how the series spans several decades, but the only concession he makes to the passage of time is that he gets bigger.
Not only is Goku the hero, he's also one of the only characters who looks remotely normal. But don't let that fool you, he's really an alien. You can tell because he has a tail and turns into a giant monkey whenever there's a full moon. Later in the series, he acquires the ability to turn his hair blond at will, which for some reason makes him about twenty times stronger. This is known as "Super Saiyan," or "Saiya-jin" if you think not translating basic Japanese phrases makes you sophisticated.
You might think the mental acuity of an eight year old might get his way, but, surprisingly Goku still manages to be the strongest fighter in the universe. And in that other one, too. Unfortunately, his sense of direction sucks, so he spends most of the series either lost or dead. Or, at one point, both. So while his friends get the crap beaten out of them by the forces of evil he sits around various truck stops trying to figure out how to read a map. Usually the other characters just find the Dragonballs and wish him back, though. Nine out of ten times it's quicker.
Now for a quick paragraph so I can actually call this a bio. Goku was born a Saiyan and was sent away on a pod to earth as his planet was being destroyed. Sort of like super man, only he was supposed to destroy earth when he got there for reasons unknown. But, being the fuck-up that he is, he wound up being raised by an old man named Gohan instead. Goku was trained by Master Roshi, is best friends with Kuririn, marries Chi Chi, and has two children, Gohan and Goten.
That about does it for Goku. The one thing to remember is that he really, really, sucks. And that spell check wants me to change his name to "Gook."
